Getting your name off mailing lists is the strongest defense in the battle against junk mail. Here's what you can do:
Step 1
As soon as you receive any unsolicited mail (catalogs, newspapers, advertising circulars), look for a contact number. Most catalogs, for example, include an 800 number. Call the number and ask that your name be removed from their list. When subscribing to future publications, include a note instructing them not to trade, rent or sell your information.
Step 2
To remove your name from the mailing lists of companies who currently send you junk mail (catalogs, sweepstakes entries, etc.) send a post card to the companies listed below and include the following information:
- Your name and address
- The message - "In order to reduce the amount of unwanted mail I receive, I am instructing you NOT to LEND, SELL, or TRADE my name to any other organization for any purpose."
- Sign and date the card.
- Send a separate card for every variation of your name used in mailings, for example:
Jane Doe
Jane J. Doe
Jane Jean Doe
Step 3
Call the National Opt-Out Center at 1-888-5-OPT-OUT (1-888-567-8688) and they'll remove your name from major credit bureaus including Equifax, Experion, Trans Union, and Novus.
You will be connected to an automated system. Pay close attention. When the message starts, choose option #2 and then option #2 again. The first option is only for a two-year period, the second opts you out FOREVER. About a week after making the call, you should receive confirmation by mail.
