David writes:
Can we shred junk mail and put it out at the curb in Suffield?

Dear David:
Yes! You can recycle your junk mail catalogs, magazines and other types of mixed paper in Suffield. You can also recycle cereal boxes, shoeboxes and other types of boxboard the same way. Find out more at CRRA's on-line recycling guide.

Jack writes:
What about phone books, paperback novels, etc? Big category, and you don't mention it

Dear Jack:
Unfortunately, we can't recycle books such as phone books or paperbacks because the binding fouls our processing machinery. Your telephone company should be taking old directories and lots of public libraries take unwanted books for annual book sales.

Ron writes:
How do i find out if my town (Vernon) participates in recycling junk mail?

Dear Ron:
As you can see on CRRA's on-line recycling guide, Vernon is recycling junk mail and other types of mixed paper. You can also recycle cereal boxes, shoe boxes and other types of boxboard!

Sue writes:
I thought your radio commercial said to check your website to see if our town could participate.

Dear Sue:
You can find more information at phillupdbag.com or at CRRA's on-line recycling guide.

Thank you for your interest in recycling and for contacting Phillup D. Bag!

Jeff writes:
i live in an apartment building in New Britain and they do no recycling whatsoever. However, due the sheer volume of people living here, recycling here could make a big difference. How do we get my town to start recycling at apartment buildings?

Dear Jeff:
Recycling in apartment buildings is a challenge because most are served by private haulers working under regulations that differ from normal residential regulations.

It can be done! Do other tenants in your building want to recycle? If so, meet with your building manager or landlord and make your desires known. Let your city council member know, too!

Arthur writes:
Can we shred it, bag it and put junk mail to the curb in New Milford?

Dear Arthur:
Unfortunately, New Milford is not a CRRA participating town. To find out what your town recycles, visit http://www.hrra.org/curbside_recycling.php.

Mike writes:
I live in Ellington CT. Can I do Phillup D. Bag???

Dear Mike:
Ellington is a participating town, so yes, you can start recycling your junk mail!

Eileen writes:
I was wondering if Newington is one of the towns that will accept junk mail recyclables...please advise. Thank you.

Dear Eileen:
Yes! Newington residents can recycle their junk mail and other types of mixed paper AND they can also recycle "boxboard" -- items like cereal boxes, pasta boxes and shoeboxes.

Check CRRA's on-line recycling guide.

Peggy writes:
Junk mail - do I have to rip out the plastic windows on the envelopes or can envelopes be put into recycle intact with the plastic address window?

Dear Peggy:
Yes, please pop out the plastic windows on envelopes before you recycle them.

And if you live in a Mid-Connecticut Project town, you can also recycle cereal boxes, pasta boxes, shoeboxes and other types of cardboard. Just remember to remove the plastic or wax paper inserts and pop out the plastic windows, then place them in the same brown paper grocery bag with your newspaper and junk mail.

John writes:
If I shred my junk mail and bills, can I put them curbside with the rest of my recyclables? I live in Cromwell and have All-Waste/Waste Management. Thanks!

Dear John:
The only items that you should shred are those containing your personal information. Once your information is protected, just place everything in the same brown paper bag as your newspapers.

Here's more good news! You can also recycle cereal boxes (after removing the inside bag and contents, shoe boxes, pasta boxes (just punch out the plastic window), shirt cardboard and other such cardboard items the same way -- just put them in your newspaper bag.

Debi writes:
Where can I find information about whether my town recycles shredded junk mail or not?

Dear Debi:
If you live in Connecticut, you can find out what your town recycles at this URL: http://www.crra.org/pages/recy_guide.htm

Barry writes:
Does junk mail have to be shredded before being left at the curb? I don't have a shredder.

Dear Barry:
We recommend that you shred or tear up any mail that contains your personal information. Catalogs, magazines and home computer paper that don't show such information don't need this treatment.

Kathie writes:
If I put my shredded papers in a paper bag with my newspapers to be recycled, will they be picked up?

Dear Kathie:
Junk mail recycling is just that easy! To find out more about what your town recycles, visit CRRA's recycling guide at http://www.crra.org/pages/recy_guide.htm.

Judy writes:
How do you know if your town does recycle such paper? Do the bags of paper and shredded paper have to be sealed or marked on the outside? I will hold my paper until I hear from you. Thank you.

Dear Judy:
To find out what your town recycles, visit CRRA's recycling guide at http://www.crra.org/pages/recy_guide.htm.

To recycle these different types of paper, just put your junk mail (shred or tear up anything that contains personal information), catalogs, magazines and home computer paper in the same paper bag in which you place your newspapers, then put them with your recycling bin.
